Why Keywords Matter
ATS systems rank resumes primarily by keyword matches. If your resume doesn't contain the same terms as the job description, it gets filtered out regardless of your qualifications.
How to Find the Right Keywords
Step 1: Analyze the Job Description
Copy the job description and identify:
- Hard skills: Python, AWS, SQL, Figma, SEO
- Soft skills: Leadership, Problem-solving, Communication
- Tools & technologies: Salesforce, Jira, Tableau

- Do they use "engineer" or "developer"?
- Do they call it "HR" or "People Operations"?

- Professional associations — check their terminology
- Competitor job postings — see how similar roles are described

Must-Have Keywords
These are non-negotiable. If the job requires "Python" and you don't have it, you won't pass the ATS.
Nice-to-Have Keywords
These boost your score but won't disqualify you if missing. Prioritize must-haves first.

Terms like "cross-functional collaboration," "stakeholder management," and "data-driven" appear across industries.

Common Keyword Mistakes
❌ Keyword Stuffing
"Python Python Python SQL SQL AWS AWS AWS" This reads unnaturally and may get flagged.
❌ Irrelevant Keywords
Don't add keywords that don't match your actual experience. You'll get caught in the interview.

Include variations: "Project Management," "Project Manager," "Managing Projects"
