Why Format Matters
Your resume format determines whether an ATS can parse your information and whether a recruiter can quickly find what they need. The wrong format can hide your qualifications regardless of how good they are.
Three Main Resume Formats
1. Chronological Format
Lists your work experience in reverse chronological order (most recent first).
Best for: Candidates with a consistent work history in the same field.
Pros:
- Preferred by most recruiters and ATS systems
- Shows clear career progression
- Easy to scan
Cons:
- Highlights employment gaps
- Doesn't emphasize transferable skills
2. Functional Format
Focuses on skills and accomplishments rather than work history timeline.
Best for: Career changers, freelancers, and candidates with employment gaps.
Pros:
- Highlights skills over job titles
- Downplays employment gaps
- Good for showcasing diverse experience
Cons:
- Suspicious to recruiters
- Many ATS systems struggle with this format
- Less common — may be filtered out
3. Hybrid / Combination Format
Blends chronological and functional approaches — skills section at the top, followed by work history.
Best for: Most job seekers in 2026.
Pros:
- ATS-friendly
- Highlights both skills and experience
- Versatile for any career stage
Cons:
- Can be longer (aim for 1-2 pages)
- Requires careful organization

Test Your Format
Before sending your resume, run it through an ATS checker like Resumit AI to verify the format is compatible. Many issues only become visible when an ATS tries to parse your document.
