Why ATS Compatibility Matters

The Quick Visual Test
Open your resume and look for these red flags:

- Tables or columns
- Text boxes
- Graphics, icons, or images
- Headers/footers with contact info
- Creative or unusual fonts
- Two-column layouts
✅ Good Signs
- Clean, single-column layout
- Standard fonts (Arial, Calibri, Garamond)
- Plain bullet points (not custom icons)
- Contact info in the main body
- Clear section headings
The Copy-Paste Test
Copy all text from your resume and paste it into a plain text editor (like Notepad).
If the text looks jumbled, has missing content, or shows strange characters, your resume will likely fail an ATS scan.
Things that disappear in plain text:
- Text in tables
- Content in text boxes
- Text in headers/footers
- Content behind images
The Keyword Test
Compare your resume against the job description:
- Copy the job description into a document
- Highlight all key skills, tools, and qualifications
- Check if those same terms appear in your resume
- Count the matches — aim for 80%+
The PDF Test
Most ATS systems prefer PDF, but not all PDFs are equal:
- Save as PDF from Word/Google Docs (don't use "Print to PDF")
- Ensure text is selectable (not a scanned image)
- Test by selecting text in your PDF viewer
The Section Header Test
Check that your section headers use standard names:

- ✅ Work Experience / Professional Experience
- ✅ Education
- ✅ Skills
- ❌ "Where I've Worked" (instead of Work Experience)
- ❌ "My Journey" (instead of Professional Summary)
